Thermal insulation
has now become mandatory in all new homes in Australia. Naturally
builders will be looking to meet the minimum requirements at the
best possible price but there is another side to the equation. As
was demonstrated in a report commissioned by the Consumer Products
Protection Commission in the United States all insulation is not
created equal.
The thermal
properties of insulation or "R" Rating is governed by
the combination of two factors the thickness and density. For an
insulation product to maintain its thermal properties over a long
period it must maintain these criteria. If it were to settle or
not be installed correctly it would not perform to the requirements
of the building code. Although the superior performance of Cellulose
is well known as it is installed with out gaps, settlement must
be taken into consideration or it will not comply. Another example
is test results show a polyester or fibre glass batt achieves R
2.5 at 150mm yet it is rare to find them return to this loft after
being removed from a compressed pack and in some cases settlement
has been observed to be quite dramatic.
The advent of
Stabilised Cellulose has largely overcome this problem as with the
addition of a small amount of moisture it can be installed at a
settled density thus guaranteeing the R Rating over the life of
the product. A complete fire resistant thermal blanket for total
protection.
Another consideration
is the future environmental impact of the different products. Natural
Cellulose is much more user friendly and at a time when the catch
cry is to build "Green" natural cellulose is the most
environmentally responsible choice.
